Process Safety

Process safety generally refers to the prevention of unintentional releases of chemicals, energy, or other potentially dangerous materials during the course of chemical processes that can have a serious effect to the plant and environment. Process safety involves, for example, the prevention of leaks, spills, equipment malfunction, over-pressures, over-temperatures, corrosion, metal fatigue and other similar conditions. Process safety programs focus on design and engineering of facilities, maintenance of equipment, effective alarms, effective control points, procedures and training. It is sometimes useful to consider process safety as the outcome or result of a wide range of technical, management and operational disciplines coming together in an organised way

Process safety focuses on preventing fires, explosions and accidental chemical releases in chemical process facilities or other facilities dealing with hazardous materials such as refineries, and oil and gas production installations. It involves a wide variety of studies and techniques like QRA, HAZOP, HAZID, PHSER, SIL, LOPA etc.

Environment and Sustainability

Environmental Impact Assessment studies (EIA) for e.g. is an important management tool for ensuring the optimal use of natural resources for sustainable development. The objective of Environmental Impact Assessment is to identify and minimize the potential adverse environmental impacts during the planning process.

The scope includes studying and addressing the following areas: Air quality modelling data, Marine water quality data and compliance, Soil and groundwater quality data and compliance statement, Performance of wastewater treatment plant, Hazardous waste disposal compliance, Ozone depleting substance compliance, Chemical spill compliance, Green belt and green cover area, Public concerns, Pollution prevention and control, Monitoring program, Marine oil spill modelling and response programs etc.

Safety focus in Energy Aspects will help to understand more about the usage of electricity and fuel in the facility, and in identification of the areas where waste can occur, scope for improvement in existing system and scope for alternative energy sources. This will give a positive orientation to the energy cost reduction, preventive maintenance and quality control program which are vital for the production and utility activities.

Logistics & Road Safety

This involves understanding the operational risks involved in   logistics (movement and storage) with the objective of being able to anticipate, prevent and mitigate risks. This applies to anyone involved in planning, managing and procuring transport and logistics services.

In our world today we see an increase in global supply chain management and global sourcing to reap the benefits of lower sourcing and production costs, but this comes with its own increased complexities and risks which could disrupt operations in a large manner. Risk management means to analyse and react to all potentially occurring risks. Control systems are as important as training of employees and a clearly defined crisis management strategy.

The scope of work here includes areas like Fleet Audits, Cargo loss minimization, Defensive driver training, Road safety campaigns, Journey risk management, Accident Investigations and Warehouse related risk management.

Construction Safety

Construction industry makes significant contribution to the economy and provides large number of employment. As per the statistics released by CIDC a few years ago, about 31 million people are employed in construction sector in which close to 73% are unskilled labourers. Use of new technologies and deployment of project management strategies has made it possible for this industry to undertake mega projects in spite of facing number of challenges. Even though it is one of the fastest growing sectors in many parts of the world, it records maximum number of accidents and injuries than any other industrial activity. In addition to cost of human injury and death, the accidents are unduly expensive in terms of damage of property and delays in completion of project.

Studies here would involve systematic, critical appraisal of all construction hazards involving personnel, plant, services and operation method at work site to ensure that the present Construction Safety, Health and Environment Management System fully satisfy the legal requirements, company’s written safety policies, objectives and applicable safety guidelines.

Electrical safety

Electrical hazards continue to threaten safety of people and property in the form of shocks, burns, injury, fire and explosion. With electricity having become an indispensable part of our life, electrical risks are to be managed effectively.

In process industries, fires due to electrical reasons are very probable, especially in industries that handle flammable chemicals. In service industries such as information technology, telecommunications, business interruption losses due to electrical hazards (fire in server room, damage of expensive communication equipment, loss of data, fire in cable gallery, etc.) could be substantial.

Statutory compliance, physical inspections, identifying electrical hazards, lightning protection systems installation, static electric hazards, maintenance of electrical equipment, Hotspot detection using infra-red hot spot detection equipment/ thermal imaging are some of the key areas in this domain of study.
